Viron P-Series P280, P300 and P600: code 3, Fan Cowl, in the replacement parts table of Astralpool's owner's manual for the P-Series pumps. Fluidra also lists a separate cowl, 40270, for its Fasco brushless DC motor, so if the data plate on an older Viron says Fasco, ask us before ordering.

Not this cowl: single speed pumps take a different cowl. The black Notos 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors on the CTX, BX, FX and XP take 40283, the beige Fasco 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors take 40257, the Notos 3 HP and three-phase motors take 40274 and the Fasco 2400W 3 HP motor takes 40262. The Jacuzzi JVX300 parts list (North America) gives a different cowl, 70614.

Ask first: the Filtrite PX. Astralpool dealers list this cowl for it, but no Astralpool parts list for the Filtrite PX was available to check. Send us a photo of the pump badge and the old cowl.

Confirm this cowl by the pump badge:

1. Viron XT or Viron eVo? Read the badge. Viron XT P320 XT, P520 XT, P320C XT or P520C XT of any series, Viron eVo P320 or Viron eVo P600: this is your cowl. It is item 17 on every one of their spare parts lists.
2. Older Viron P280, P300 or P600? Check the motor. Astralpool's P-Series owner's manual lists 70600 as the fan cowl. Fluidra also lists cowl 40270 for its Fasco brushless DC motor, so if the motor data plate says Fasco, ask us first.
3. Single speed pump? Different cowl. CTX, BX, FX and XP pumps take 40283 on the black Notos 750W to 1500W motors, 40257 on the beige Fasco motors, 40274 on the Notos 3 HP and three-phase motors and 40262 on the Fasco 2400W 3 HP motor.
4. Check the fan while the cowl is off. Blades that have hit a broken cowl are often chipped. Replace the fan with 40285 if blades are broken or the hub is cracked, and the clip 40285C if it is bent, stretched or missing.

What the Fan Cowl Does

These pump motors are air cooled. The fan on the rear of the motor shaft draws air in through the cowl and pushes it along the motor body, and the cowl guides that air and keeps fingers and debris away from the spinning fan. Astralpool's Viron XT installation manual says the pump must have proper ventilation to prevent the motor overheating, that overheating due to lack of cooling voids the warranty, and lists poor airflow over the motor as a cause of the HI T over temperature fault. A single speed pump has no display to warn you that it is running hot.

The same manual says to check the surroundings for leaves and debris and, with the power off, to spray a surface insecticide around the control every three months, because ants and some insects are attracted to the warm, dry environment inside the enclosure.

Fitting Notes

Isolate the pump at the power point or switchboard before removing the cowl. Astralpool's pump manuals say the pump must be installed and serviced by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000.

1. Remove the old cowl from the rear of the motor, noting how it locates.
2. While it is off, check the fan and its clip, and replace them if they are cracked, chipped or loose.
3. Fit the new cowl the same way round, make sure it is fully seated, and turn the fan by hand to check it does not touch the cowl.

When to Replace

Astralpool's maintenance schedules give no service interval for the fan cowl. Replace it when it is cracked, broken, distorted or missing, or when the fan has been hitting it.

No. 70600 is the cowl only. The fan is 40285 and its retaining clip is 40285C.

Why is my Viron XT showing HI T or dropping to SAFE?
Astralpool's Viron XT manual lists extreme ambient temperatures and poor airflow over the motor as causes of the HI T over temperature fault. The pump slows itself to reduce heat and shows SAFE while it is still running, then Hi T once the control is too hot. Check that the cowl is not blocked by leaves, dirt or ants, then check that the fan has all its blades and is held firmly on the shaft.
