Fluidra describes the Fasco fan 40256 as for older CTX models, and the matching cowl 40257 as Fasco, Beige, 750W, 1100W, 1500W. Astralpool's pumps manual H0717800 lists motors 71313, 71314 and 71319 (black on Astralpool's BX list) (now SP71613, SP71614 and SP71619) for the CTX 280 to 500, FX 250 to 520 and single phase XP 1.0 to 2.0, and those take a different fan and cowl. Go by the motor fitted, not the pump badge.

Not this cowl: black Notos 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors take 40283, and the Viron pumps take 70600. Notos 3 HP and three-phase motors take 40274, the Fasco 2400W 3 HP motor takes 40262, and the Fasco beige mini and 560W motors take cowl 40244 (not stocked).

Ask first: beige 3 HP (2200W) motors, beige mini motors and any motor you are unsure of. Send us a photo of the motor, its data plate and the old cowl.

Confirm this cowl by the motor it came off:

1. Beige or black motor? A beige motor (71323, 71324 or 71329) takes this cowl. A black Notos motor (71313, 71314 or 71319, now SP71613, SP71614 or SP71619) takes 40283 instead.
2. Check the wattage. Fluidra's description covers the 750W, 1100W and 1500W Fasco motors only. The Fasco 2400W 3 HP motor takes 40262, and the beige mini and 560W motors take 40244.
3. Check the fan while the cowl is off. Replace the Fasco fan 40256 too if blades are chipped or broken, or the hub is cracked.
4. Anything else? Ask first. Send us a photo of the motor data plate and the old cowl, and we will confirm the part before you order.

What the Fan Cowl Does

These pump motors are air cooled. The fan on the rear of the motor shaft draws air in through the cowl and pushes it along the motor body, and the cowl guides that air and keeps fingers and debris away from the spinning fan. Astralpool's Viron XT installation manual says the pump must have proper ventilation to prevent the motor overheating, that overheating due to lack of cooling voids the warranty, and lists poor airflow over the motor as a cause of the HI T over temperature fault. A single speed pump has no display to warn you that it is running hot.

The same manual says to check the surroundings for leaves and debris and, with the power off, to spray a surface insecticide around the control every three months, because ants and some insects are attracted to the warm, dry environment inside the enclosure.

Fitting Notes

Isolate the pump at the power point or switchboard before removing the cowl. Astralpool's pump manuals say the pump must be installed and serviced by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000.

1. Remove the old cowl from the rear of the motor, noting how it locates.
2. While it is off, check the fan and its clip, and replace them if they are cracked, chipped or loose.
3. Fit the new cowl the same way round, make sure it is fully seated, and turn the fan by hand to check it does not touch the cowl.

When to Replace

Astralpool's maintenance schedules give no service interval for the fan cowl. Replace it when it is cracked, broken, distorted or missing, or when the fan has been hitting it.
