Astralpool CMG Motor Cooling Fan 40183 (Small) - 0.75 kW and 0.93 kW CMG Motors: CX 180/240/280, TX 0.75/1 HP
This is the genuine Astralpool small Motor Cooling Fan for CMG motors, part number 40183. Fluidra describes it as the Motor Fan 0.75 0.93kW CMG, and its motor spare parts list as Cooling Fan, CMG, 750W, listed for the CX 180, 240 and 280, FX 340 and 520, and TX 0.75 and 1 HP. It is held on by the CMG circlip 40209, sold separately. A larger CMG fan, 40184, is discontinued. One fan per pump.
- Physically Stocked, unlike most "drop-shipping" websites.
- Shipped from VIC, NSW, WA, QLD
Confirmed Compatibility
Listed by motor, because the fan is a motor part: CMG motors rated 0.75 kW and 0.93 kW (Fluidra).
Pumps named for this fan on Fluidra's motor spare parts list:
- CX 180, CX 240, CX 280
- TX 0.75 and TX 1 HP
- FX 340 and FX 520 (see Ask First)
Astralpool's 2017 CX spare parts list shows beige motors for the CX, and its current pumps manual (H0717800) gives the FX the black Notos motor, and those motors take different fans. Go by the motor fitted, not the pump badge.
Not this fan: beige Fasco 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors take 40256, and black Notos motors and the Viron pumps take 40285. Fluidra also lists a large CMG cooling fan, 40184, which is discontinued.
Ask first: the FX 340 and FX 520. Fluidra's list names them for this fan, but the current FX 340 and FX 520 have the black Notos 1100W and 1500W motors, which take 40285. Also ask first for any CMG motor not rated 0.75 kW or 0.93 kW. Send us a photo of the motor, its data plate and the old fan.

The CMG Fan Rule (rev. CMF-1.0)
Confirm this fan by the motor it came off:
- Read the motor data plate. A CMG motor rated 0.75 kW or 0.93 kW takes this fan, held on by circlip 40209.
- Old fan larger than this one? Ask first. Fluidra lists a large CMG fan, 40184, which is discontinued. Send us a photo of the data plate and the old fan.
- Beige or black motor? Different fan. Beige Fasco 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors take 40256. Black Notos motors take 40285.
- Fit a new circlip. Replace the CMG circlip 40209 if it is bent, stretched or lost, or was damaged getting the old fan off.
What the Cooling Fan Does
These pump motors are air cooled. The fan on the rear of the motor shaft draws air in through the cowl and pushes it along the motor body, and the cowl guides that air and keeps fingers and debris away from the spinning fan. Astralpool's Viron XT installation manual says the pump must have proper ventilation to prevent the motor overheating, that overheating due to lack of cooling voids the warranty, and lists poor airflow over the motor as a cause of the HI T over temperature fault. A single speed pump has no display to warn you that it is running hot.
The same manual says to check the surroundings for leaves and debris and, with the power off, to spray a surface insecticide around the control every three months, because ants and some insects are attracted to the warm, dry environment inside the enclosure.

Fitting Notes
Isolate the pump at the power point or switchboard before removing the cowl. Astralpool's pump manuals say the pump must be installed and serviced by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000.
- Remove the fan cowl from the rear of the motor.
- Remove the circlip 40209 from the end of the shaft and slide the old fan off, noting which way round it sits.
- Fit the new fan the same way round and refit the circlip. Use a new 40209 if the old one is bent, stretched or lost.
- Turn the fan by hand to check it is seated and clears the cowl, then refit the cowl.
When to Replace
Astralpool's maintenance schedules give no service interval for the cooling fan. Replace it when blades are broken or missing, when the hub is cracked, when it no longer grips the shaft, or when the cowl is off for a motor, bearing or seal job and the fan shows damage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which pumps does the 40183 fan fit?
Pumps with a CMG motor rated 0.75 kW or 0.93 kW. Fluidra's motor spare parts list names the CX 180, 240 and 280, FX 340 and 520, and TX 0.75 and 1 HP for this fan. Check the motor first, because the CX pumps on Astralpool's 2017 list and the current FX pumps have other motors.
Is the circlip included?
No. The CMG circlip is 40209, sold separately.
What about the large CMG fan 40184?
40184 is discontinued. Send us a photo of your motor and old fan and we will check what is available.
Does it fit a CTX?
Not on Fluidra's lists. The CTX 280 to 500 have the black motor (fan 40285) or, on older pumps, a beige Fasco motor (fan 40256). The CTX 180 has the mini motor 71310.
Is this a genuine Astralpool part?
Yes. Heater and Spa Parts is an authorised Fluidra (Astralpool and Zodiac) dealer and warranty agent, and 40183 is the genuine Astralpool part, barcode 9343609057220.
Can I fit it myself?
Isolate the pump from power first. Astralpool's pump manuals say the pump must be installed and serviced by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000. As with all of our products, it must be diagnosed and fitted by a qualified and experienced person.

To the layperson, plumbing sizes and their names can be confusing due to the nominal sizes and naming conventions used.
This is not something we made up. Plumbers and manufacturers have used nominal (meaning ‘by name only’) sizing for decades.
Simply put, in plumbing, named sizes are often not the actual measurements of the pipe, fitting, or part. A PVC pipe called “50mm” or “2"” does not measure 50 mm anywhere. Instead, it follows nominal sizing, an internationally-standardised naming system.
Almost all fittings we use in the pool & spa industry use “pressure PVC” pipe & fittings. Do not confuse with “DWV” or other pipe & fittings and their names and sizes.
Use the Outside Diameter (OD) to check your pipe against fittings. Below is a quick reference for common spa & pool pipe sizes:
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Pipe Diameter (OD) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 15mm | ~21.2–21.5 mm |
| 3/4" | 20mm | ~26.6–26.9 mm |
| 1" | 25 mm | ~33.4–33.7 mm |
| 1.5" | 40 mm | ~48.1–48.4 mm |
| 2" | 50 mm | ~60.2–60.8 mm |
| 2.5" | 65 mm | ~75.2–75.5 mm |
To reiterate, these are nominal sizes and are designed to fit matching fittings — not to measure what their name suggests. These are based on PVC Pressure Pipe AS/NZ 1477 Dimensions1.
- º Internal diameters vary slightly by manufacturer and class.
- 1 Not all pool/spa fittings match these dimensions exactly. Some do not follow Australian or international standards. Chinese spas may use proprietary fittings.
Understanding Plumbing Sizes & Nominal Measurements
Plumbing sizes can be confusing. PVC and many other pipe systems use nominal sizes—the size is a name, not the exact measured dimension. This convention is used across most pool and spa systems and other plumbing areas so that pipes and fittings remain compatible.
Why pipe sizes don’t match the measurements
The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) system standardises pipe dimensions so that pipes, fittings, valves, and accessories interoperate.
Plumbers work with these nominal names every day, but DIYers can be tripped up if they try to match by a tape-measure alone.
How to Measure Pipe Correctly
-
Pipe size is identified by:
- The pipe’s Outside Diameter (OD).
- The fitting’s Inside Diameter (ID) (socket opening).
- Pipe Class / Schedule (e.g., Class 9, 12, 18 or Sch 40) relates to wall thickness and therefore the Internal Diameter (ID) and pressure rating.
- The outside diameter of a fitting is not useful (wall thickness varies by manufacturer).
Hose & Tube Dimensions
Common flexible hose sizes used in pool/spa systems (approximate IDs).
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Inside Diameter (ID) |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8" | 9–10 mm | ~9 mm |
| 3/4" | 19 mm | ~19 mm |
BSP – British Standard Pipe Thread Sizes
BSP thread names are also nominal. The thread OD will not equal the nominal name.
| BSP Thread Size Naming | Outside Diameter (mm / inch) | TPI |
|---|---|---|
| 1/16" BSP | 7.7 mm / 0.304" | 28 |
| 1/8" BSP | 9.7 mm / 0.383" | 28 |
| 1/4" BSP | 13.16 mm / 0.518" | 19 |
| 3/8" BSP | 16.66 mm / 0.656" | 19 |
| 1/2" BSP / 15 mm | 20.99 mm / 0.825" | 14 |
| 5/8" BSP | 22.99 mm / 0.902" | 14 |
| 3/4" BSP / 20 mm | 26.44 mm / 1.041" | 14 |
| 7/8" BSP | 30.20 mm / 1.189" | 14 |
| 1" BSP / 25 mm | 33.25 mm / 1.309" | 11 |
| 1-1/4" BSP | 41.91 mm / 1.650" | 11 |
| 1-1/2" BSP / 40 mm | 47.80 mm / 1.882" | 11 |
| 2" BSP / 50 mm | 59.61 mm / 2.347" | 11 |
| 2-1/4" BSP | 65.71 mm / 2.587" | 11 |
| 2-1/2" BSP | 75.18 mm / 2.960" | 11 |
| 3" BSP | 87.88 mm / 3.460" | 11 |
| 4" BSP | 113.03 mm / 4.450" | 11 |
| 5" BSP | 138.43 mm / 5.450" | 11 |
| 6" BSP | 163.83 mm / 6.450" | 11 |
