Astralpool Motor Cooling Fan 40285 - Viron XT, eVo P320/P600, CTX 280/360/400/500, BX 1.0/1.5/2.0, FX 250/290/340/520, XP 1.0/1.5/2.0 (Notos Motor)
This is the genuine Astralpool Motor Cooling Fan, part number 40285, for the standard Notos motor, in both its brushless DC form in the Viron variable speed pumps and its black single speed form (750W, 1100W and 1500W) in the CTX, BX, FX and XP pumps. Fluidra describes the part as the Cooling Fan XT Standard BLDC Notos on the Viron side and as the Cooling Fan CTX Notos Std, 750W, 1100W, 1500W on its motor spare parts list: the same fan on both. The fan belongs to the motor, so every pump fitted with one of these motors takes this fan. One fan per pump. The circlip that holds it on the shaft is a separate part, 40285C.
Shaft Hole Diameter: ~15.5mm - Has flat spot inside shaft hole.
Fan Diameter: 126mm
- Physically Stocked, unlike most "drop-shipping" websites.
- Shipped from VIC, NSW, WA, QLD
Confirmed Compatibility
Listed by motor, because the fan is a motor part. One fan per pump, held on by circlip 40285C.

Single speed pumps with the black Notos motor (750W, 1100W, 1500W)
| Black Notos motor | Pumps fitted with it |
|---|---|
| 750W, 71313 (now SP71613) | CTX 280, CTX 360, BX 1.0, FX 250, FX 290, XP 1.0 |
| 1100W, 71314 (now SP71614) | CTX 400, BX 1.5, FX 340, XP 1.5 |
| 1500W, 71319 (now SP71619) | CTX 500, BX 2.0, FX 520, XP 2.0 |
Motor numbers for the CTX, FX and XP are from Astralpool's pumps installation manual H0717800, Astralpool's BX spare parts list includes the same three black motors, and Astralpool dealers list them for the BX 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0. XP figures are for the single phase models. Some older pumps of these models were built with a different motor (a beige Fasco motor on older CTX and BX pumps, a CMG motor on older FX pumps), so go by the motor fitted, not the pump badge (see the rule below).
Fluidra's international spare parts catalogue lists this fan for the Viron XT P320 and P520 as "FAN P320-P600", and the Jacuzzi JVX300 parts list (North America) gives 402852, Motor Cooling Fan and Retaining Clip, on motor 71462, the same motor as the Viron XT P520.
Not this fan: beige Fasco 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors (71323, 71324, 71329) on older CTX and BX pumps take 40256 (cowl 40257). The 750W mini motor 71310 on the CTX 180, FX 190 and all E-Series pumps takes a different fan: Fluidra describes 40251 as the Cooling Fan Suit 71310 Motor, and also lists a Notos mini motor fan, 40284, so ask first. The 3 HP and three-phase motors on the CTX 610, BX 3.0, XP 3.0, XP 4.0 and three-phase XP pumps take a different fan; Fluidra lists 40275 for its Notos 3 HP and three-phase motors. CX, TX and older FX pumps with CMG motors take 40183 (large version 40184, circlip 40209). Fluidra lists 40269 for its Fasco BLDC motor.
Ask first: the FX 140, Viron P280, Viron P300 and Filtrite PX. The Astralpool parts lists available to us do not show which fan these take (Astralpool dealers list 40285 for the Filtrite PX), so send us a photo of the motor and its data plate before ordering.

The Notos Motor Rule (rev. VCF-1.3)
Confirm this fan by the pump and the motor it came off:
- Viron? Read the badge. Viron XT (P320 XT, P520 XT, P320C XT or P520C XT, original, Series 2 or MKII), Viron eVo P320 or Viron eVo P600: this is your fan. The generation does not matter: 40285 is item 19 on the original, Series 2 and MKII Viron XT parts lists.
- CTX, BX, FX or XP? Read the motor data plate. A black Notos motor (71313, 71314 or 71319, supplied now as SP71613, SP71614 and SP71619) takes this fan, whichever of these pumps it is fitted to. A beige motor (71323, 71324 or 71329) takes fan 40256 and cowl 40257 instead, not 40285.
- Smaller or larger motor? Different fan. The 750W mini motor 71310 (CTX 180, FX 190 and E-Series) takes a different fan: Fluidra describes 40251 as the Cooling Fan Suit 71310 Motor, and also lists a Notos mini motor fan, 40284, so ask first. The 3 HP and three-phase motors (CTX 610, BX 3.0, XP 3.0, XP 4.0 and three-phase XP) take a different fan; Fluidra lists 40275 for the Notos versions. CMG motors on the older CX, TX and FX pumps take 40183 or 40184 with circlip 40209, and Fluidra lists 40269 for its Fasco BLDC motor.
- Look under the cowl. The fan sits on the rear of the motor shaft under the fan cowl (70600 on the Viron pumps, 40283 on the black Notos single speed motors), and is held on by circlip 40285C. Compare your old fan with the 125 mm diameter above. If it matches, order 40285, and add 40285C if the clip is missing, bent or was destroyed getting the old fan off.
- Any other model, including the FX 140, Viron P280, Viron P300 and Filtrite PX? Ask first. The Astralpool parts lists available to us do not show which fan these take (Astralpool dealers list 40285 for the Filtrite PX). Photograph the pump badge, the motor data plate and the old fan, and contact us. We will confirm the part before you order.
What the Cooling Fan Does
The Notos motor is air cooled. The fan on the rear of the shaft draws air in through the cowl and pushes it along the motor body, and on the Viron pumps the controller mounted on the motor depends on that airflow as well. Astralpool's Viron XT installation manual says the pump must have proper ventilation to prevent the motor overheating, that overheating due to lack of cooling voids the warranty, and lists poor airflow over the motor as a cause of the HI T over temperature fault. When HI T is triggered the pump slows itself down to reduce the heat it generates, shows SAFE while it is still running, and displays Hi T once the controller is too hot. A single speed CTX, BX, FX or XP has no display to warn you; the motor simply runs hot until its thermal overload trips or a bearing gives up.
A fan with broken or missing blades, or one spinning loose on the shaft because the retaining clip has gone, moves far less air. The pump keeps running, but the motor runs hotter than Astralpool designed it to, and that is what shortens the life of the bearings, the windings and, on the Viron, the electronics.
Symptoms of a Damaged or Loose Cooling Fan
- HI T over temperature fault on a Viron XT, or the pump dropping to SAFE speed on warm days, with nothing blocking the cowl
- A single speed pump that runs hot to the touch and cuts out on thermal overload during long summer runs
- Rattling, clicking or ticking from the rear of the motor: blades hitting the cowl, or a loose fan on the shaft
- The fan does not turn with the shaft, or wobbles on it: the circlip 40285C has come off or lost its tension
- Broken blades after the cowl has been damaged, or after debris or an insect nest has been drawn into the cowl
Before condemning the fan, check that the cowl is not blocked by leaves, dirt or ants. Astralpool recommends keeping the area around the pump clear of debris and, with the power off, spraying a surface insecticide around the control every three months because ants and insects are drawn to the warm, dry enclosure.
Worked Example
Say the badge on your pump reads CTX 400, the motor is black with 71314 on the data plate, and the pump has started cutting out on hot afternoons. You isolate the power, pull the cowl and find two fan blades snapped off and the fan loose on the shaft with no clip. 71314 is the 1100W Notos motor, so 40285 is the fan to order, and you add the retaining clip 40285C because the old one is missing. A BX 1.5, FX 340 or XP 1.5 with the same motor takes the same fan. If the motor were a beige Fasco 71324, the fan would be 40256 instead. On a Viron P520C XT showing SAFE and then Hi T, the answer is also 40285, because every Viron XT uses it.

Fitting Notes
Isolate the pump at the power point or switchboard before touching the cowl. Astralpool's pump manuals say the pump must be installed and serviced by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000, and on the Viron pumps the fan sits directly behind the mains powered controller.
- Remove the fan cowl from the rear of the motor.
- Remove the circlip 40285C from the end of the shaft and slide the old fan off, noting which way round it sits.
- Fit the new fan the same way round and refit the circlip. Use a new 40285C if the old one is bent, stretched or lost.
- Turn the fan by hand to check it is seated and clears the cowl, then refit the cowl.
When to Replace
Astralpool's maintenance schedules give no service interval for the cooling fan. Replace it when blades are broken or missing, when it no longer grips the shaft, or when the cowl is off for a motor, bearing or seal job and the fan shows cracks at the hub. Replace the circlip 40285C at the same time if it has lost its tension.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which pumps does the 40285 cooling fan fit?
Any Astralpool pump fitted with the standard Notos motor: the Viron XT P320 XT, P520 XT, P320C XT and P520C XT of every series (original, Series 2 and MKII), the Viron eVo P320 and P600, and the CTX 280, 360, 400 and 500, BX 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0, FX 250, 290, 340 and 520 and single phase XP 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 with the black Notos motor 71313, 71314 or 71319. One fan per pump.
Does 40285 fit the CTX 280, 360, 400 and 500?
Yes, when the pump has the black Notos motor: 71313 (750W, CTX 280 and 360), 71314 (1100W, CTX 400) or 71319 (1500W, CTX 500), now supplied as SP71613, SP71614 and SP71619. Fluidra's motor spare parts list calls 40285 the Cooling Fan CTX Notos Std for the 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors. Older CTX pumps with a beige motor (71323, 71324 or 71329) take fan 40256 and cowl 40257 instead.
Does 40285 fit the BX, FX and XP pumps?
Yes, when they have the same black Notos motor as the CTX: 750W 71313 (BX 1.0, FX 250, FX 290, XP 1.0), 1100W 71314 (BX 1.5, FX 340, XP 1.5) or 1500W 71319 (BX 2.0, FX 520, XP 2.0). The fan is part of the motor, so the same motor takes the same fan whichever pump it is fitted to. The BX 3.0, XP 3.0, XP 4.0 and three-phase XP pumps use larger motors with a different fan, and the FX 190 uses the mini motor.
How do I tell a Notos motor from a Fasco or CMG motor?
Check the motor colour and part number. Astralpool's spare parts lists give the black Notos motors as 71313 (750W), 71314 (1100W) and 71319 (1500W), now supplied as SP71613, SP71614 and SP71619, and the older beige motors as 71323 (750W), 71324 (1100W) and 71329 (1500W). Fluidra lists separate CMG fans for older CX, FX and TX pumps. If you are unsure, send us a photo of the motor and its plate.
Does it matter which generation of Viron XT I have?
Not for the fan. The original Viron XT list (manual INST 434) has a different lid, wet end, seal plate and bolts from the Series 2 and MKII lists, but the motor cooling fan is 40285 and the retaining clip is 40285C on all three.
Is the retaining clip included with the fan?
No. 40285 is the fan only. The circlip that holds it on the motor shaft is 40285C and is sold separately. Order both if your clip is missing, bent or stretched, or if it was destroyed getting the old fan off.
Which fan do the E-Series, CTX 180, FX 190, CTX 610 and 3 HP pumps take?
Not this one. Astralpool lists the 750W mini motor 71310 for the E-Series, CTX 180 and FX 190. Fluidra describes 40251 as the Cooling Fan Suit 71310 Motor, and also lists a separate Notos mini motor fan, 40284, so send a photo before ordering a mini motor fan. The CTX 610, BX 3.0, XP 3.0, XP 4.0 and three-phase XP pumps use 3 HP or three-phase motors with a different fan; Fluidra lists 40275 for its Notos 3 HP and three-phase motors. The older CX, TX and FX pumps with CMG motors take 40183 (large version 40184) with circlip 40209, and Fluidra lists 40269 for its Fasco BLDC motor. If in doubt, send a photo of the motor data plate.
What does Cooling Fan XT Standard BLDC Notos mean?
It is Fluidra's catalogue description for the part. Notos is a motor name Fluidra uses on its parts lists, alongside Fasco and CMG, and the same name appears on other motor parts such as the Notos bearing retainer 40296 and the Notos shaft flinger seal 40808. Standard separates this fan from the Notos mini motor fan and the Notos 3 HP fan, and BLDC is brushless DC, the motor type in the variable speed Viron pumps. The same fan appears on Fluidra's motor parts list as Cooling Fan CTX Notos Std, 750W, 1100W, 1500W.
Why is my Viron XT showing HI T or dropping to SAFE?
Astralpool's Viron XT manual lists poor airflow over the motor and extreme ambient temperatures as the causes of the HI T over temperature fault. The pump slows itself to reduce heat and shows SAFE while it is still running, then Hi T once the controller is too hot. Check that the cowl is not blocked by leaves, dirt or ants first, then check that the fan has all its blades and is locked to the shaft.
How do I check whether the fan is the problem?
Isolate the pump from power, take the fan cowl off the rear of the motor and look at the fan. Broken or missing blades, cracks at the hub, or a fan that turns or wobbles independently of the shaft all mean a new fan, and a fan that is loose on the shaft usually also means a new retaining clip 40285C.
What size is the 40285 cooling fan?
125 mm outside diameter, as published by Astralpool dealers; Astralpool's own parts lists give no dimensions. It sits on the rear of the motor shaft under the fan cowl and is held on by circlip 40285C. Compare it with your old fan, and send us a photo if you are unsure.
Is Astralpool 40285 the same as Jacuzzi 402852?
The Jacuzzi JVX300 parts list (North America) gives 402852, Motor Cooling Fan and Retaining Clip, as item 19 on motor 71462, the same motor and item number as the Viron XT P520. In Australia the fan (40285) and the clip (40285C) are separate Astralpool part numbers.
Is this a genuine Astralpool part?
Yes. Heater and Spa Parts is an authorised Fluidra (Astralpool and Zodiac) dealer and warranty agent, and 40285 is the genuine Astralpool motor cooling fan, barcode 9343609016111.
Can I fit the fan myself?
Isolate the pump from power first. Astralpool's pump manuals say the pump must be installed and serviced by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000, and on the Viron pumps the fan sits directly behind the mains powered controller. As with all of our products, it must be diagnosed and fitted by a qualified and experienced person.

To the layperson, plumbing sizes and their names can be confusing due to the nominal sizes and naming conventions used.
This is not something we made up. Plumbers and manufacturers have used nominal (meaning ‘by name only’) sizing for decades.
Simply put, in plumbing, named sizes are often not the actual measurements of the pipe, fitting, or part. A PVC pipe called “50mm” or “2"” does not measure 50 mm anywhere. Instead, it follows nominal sizing, an internationally-standardised naming system.
Almost all fittings we use in the pool & spa industry use “pressure PVC” pipe & fittings. Do not confuse with “DWV” or other pipe & fittings and their names and sizes.
Use the Outside Diameter (OD) to check your pipe against fittings. Below is a quick reference for common spa & pool pipe sizes:
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Pipe Diameter (OD) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 15mm | ~21.2–21.5 mm |
| 3/4" | 20mm | ~26.6–26.9 mm |
| 1" | 25 mm | ~33.4–33.7 mm |
| 1.5" | 40 mm | ~48.1–48.4 mm |
| 2" | 50 mm | ~60.2–60.8 mm |
| 2.5" | 65 mm | ~75.2–75.5 mm |
To reiterate, these are nominal sizes and are designed to fit matching fittings — not to measure what their name suggests. These are based on PVC Pressure Pipe AS/NZ 1477 Dimensions1.
- º Internal diameters vary slightly by manufacturer and class.
- 1 Not all pool/spa fittings match these dimensions exactly. Some do not follow Australian or international standards. Chinese spas may use proprietary fittings.
Understanding Plumbing Sizes & Nominal Measurements
Plumbing sizes can be confusing. PVC and many other pipe systems use nominal sizes—the size is a name, not the exact measured dimension. This convention is used across most pool and spa systems and other plumbing areas so that pipes and fittings remain compatible.
Why pipe sizes don’t match the measurements
The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) system standardises pipe dimensions so that pipes, fittings, valves, and accessories interoperate.
Plumbers work with these nominal names every day, but DIYers can be tripped up if they try to match by a tape-measure alone.
How to Measure Pipe Correctly
-
Pipe size is identified by:
- The pipe’s Outside Diameter (OD).
- The fitting’s Inside Diameter (ID) (socket opening).
- Pipe Class / Schedule (e.g., Class 9, 12, 18 or Sch 40) relates to wall thickness and therefore the Internal Diameter (ID) and pressure rating.
- The outside diameter of a fitting is not useful (wall thickness varies by manufacturer).
Hose & Tube Dimensions
Common flexible hose sizes used in pool/spa systems (approximate IDs).
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Inside Diameter (ID) |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8" | 9–10 mm | ~9 mm |
| 3/4" | 19 mm | ~19 mm |
BSP – British Standard Pipe Thread Sizes
BSP thread names are also nominal. The thread OD will not equal the nominal name.
| BSP Thread Size Naming | Outside Diameter (mm / inch) | TPI |
|---|---|---|
| 1/16" BSP | 7.7 mm / 0.304" | 28 |
| 1/8" BSP | 9.7 mm / 0.383" | 28 |
| 1/4" BSP | 13.16 mm / 0.518" | 19 |
| 3/8" BSP | 16.66 mm / 0.656" | 19 |
| 1/2" BSP / 15 mm | 20.99 mm / 0.825" | 14 |
| 5/8" BSP | 22.99 mm / 0.902" | 14 |
| 3/4" BSP / 20 mm | 26.44 mm / 1.041" | 14 |
| 7/8" BSP | 30.20 mm / 1.189" | 14 |
| 1" BSP / 25 mm | 33.25 mm / 1.309" | 11 |
| 1-1/4" BSP | 41.91 mm / 1.650" | 11 |
| 1-1/2" BSP / 40 mm | 47.80 mm / 1.882" | 11 |
| 2" BSP / 50 mm | 59.61 mm / 2.347" | 11 |
| 2-1/4" BSP | 65.71 mm / 2.587" | 11 |
| 2-1/2" BSP | 75.18 mm / 2.960" | 11 |
| 3" BSP | 87.88 mm / 3.460" | 11 |
| 4" BSP | 113.03 mm / 4.450" | 11 |
| 5" BSP | 138.43 mm / 5.450" | 11 |
