Not this fan: the black Notos 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors and the Viron pumps take 40285. Beige Fasco 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors take 40256. Notos 3 HP and three-phase motors take 40275, and CMG motors take 40183.

Ask first, every time: Fluidra's motor spare parts list also has a separate Notos mini motor fan, 40284 (not stocked), and Astralpool's 2014 E-Series list shows an earlier beige Fasco mini motor, 71312. Fluidra also lists a 750W mini black motor with slinger, SP71610, which is not named on this fan's description. Confirm this fan by the motor, and check with us before ordering:

1. Read the motor data plate. 71310 (750W mini) or a Fasco beige 560W motor: Fluidra lists this fan for both.
2. Check the pump. Astralpool lists the 71310 mini motor for the CTX 180, FX 190 and all E-Series. Other pumps have a different motor and fan: 40285 on the black 750W to 1500W motors, 40256 on the beige 750W to 1500W motors, and other fans on 3 HP and three-phase motors.
3. Notos mini, SP71610 or older beige mini? Ask first. Fluidra lists a separate Notos mini motor fan, 40284, and an SP71610 mini motor with slinger that is not named on this fan's description. The 2014 E-Series list shows a beige Fasco mini motor, 71312. Send us a photo of the data plate and the old fan.
4. Compare the old fan before fitting. Hold the old fan against the new one: size, blade count and hub should match. If they do not, stop and contact us.

What the Cooling Fan Does

These pump motors are air cooled. The fan on the rear of the motor shaft draws air in through the cowl and pushes it along the motor body, and the cowl guides that air and keeps fingers and debris away from the spinning fan. Astralpool's Viron XT installation manual says the pump must have proper ventilation to prevent the motor overheating, that overheating due to lack of cooling voids the warranty, and lists poor airflow over the motor as a cause of the HI T over temperature fault. A single speed pump has no display to warn you that it is running hot.

The same manual says to check the surroundings for leaves and debris and, with the power off, to spray a surface insecticide around the control every three months, because ants and some insects are attracted to the warm, dry environment inside the enclosure.

Fitting Notes

Isolate the pump at the power point or switchboard before removing the cowl. Astralpool's pump manuals say the pump must be installed and serviced by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000.

1. Remove the fan cowl from the rear of the motor.
2. Remove whatever holds the fan on the shaft and slide the old fan off, noting which way round it sits.
3. Fit the new fan the same way round and secure it as the old one was secured.
4. Turn the fan by hand to check it is seated and clears the cowl, then refit the cowl.

When to Replace

Astralpool's maintenance schedules give no service interval for the cooling fan. Replace it when blades are broken or missing, when the hub is cracked, when it no longer grips the shaft, or when the cowl is off for a motor, bearing or seal job and the fan shows damage.
