Fluidra describes the Fasco fan 40256 as for older CTX models, and the matching cowl 40257 as Fasco, Beige, 750W, 1100W, 1500W. Astralpool's pumps manual H0717800 lists motors 71313, 71314 and 71319 (black on Astralpool's BX list) (now SP71613, SP71614 and SP71619) for the CTX 280 to 500, FX 250 to 520 and single phase XP 1.0 to 2.0, and those take a different fan and cowl. Go by the motor fitted, not the pump badge.

Not this fan: black Notos 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors and the Viron pumps take 40285. CMG motors take 40183 with circlip 40209. Notos 3 HP and three-phase motors take 40275. The Fasco 2400W 3 HP motor takes fan 40263 (not stocked) under cowl 40262, the Fasco beige 560W motor takes 40251, and the Fasco BLDC motor takes 40269.

Confirm this fan by the motor it came off:

1. Beige or black motor? A beige motor (71323, 71324 or 71329) takes this fan. A black Notos motor (71313, 71314 or 71319, now SP71613, SP71614 or SP71619) takes 40285 instead.
2. Check the wattage. Fluidra's description covers the 750W, 1100W and 1500W Fasco motors only. For a beige 3 HP (2200W) motor, ask first.
3. Look under the cowl. The fan sits on the rear of the motor shaft under the Fasco fan cowl 40257. Compare your old fan with this one, and replace the cowl too if it is cracked.
4. CMG or anything else? Ask first. CMG motors take 40183 with circlip 40209. For any other motor, send us a photo of the data plate and the old fan.

What the Cooling Fan Does

These pump motors are air cooled. The fan on the rear of the motor shaft draws air in through the cowl and pushes it along the motor body, and the cowl guides that air and keeps fingers and debris away from the spinning fan. Astralpool's Viron XT installation manual says the pump must have proper ventilation to prevent the motor overheating, that overheating due to lack of cooling voids the warranty, and lists poor airflow over the motor as a cause of the HI T over temperature fault. A single speed pump has no display to warn you that it is running hot.

The same manual says to check the surroundings for leaves and debris and, with the power off, to spray a surface insecticide around the control every three months, because ants and some insects are attracted to the warm, dry environment inside the enclosure.

Fitting Notes

Isolate the pump at the power point or switchboard before removing the cowl. Astralpool's pump manuals say the pump must be installed and serviced by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000.

1. Remove the fan cowl from the rear of the motor.
2. Remove whatever holds the fan on the shaft and slide the old fan off, noting which way round it sits.
3. Fit the new fan the same way round and secure it as the old one was secured.
4. Turn the fan by hand to check it is seated and clears the cowl, then refit the cowl.

When to Replace

Astralpool's maintenance schedules give no service interval for the cooling fan. Replace it when blades are broken or missing, when the hub is cracked, when it no longer grips the shaft, or when the cowl is off for a motor, bearing or seal job and the fan shows damage.
