This is the genuine Astralpool Retaining Clip for the motor cooling fan, part number 40285C. It holds the 40285 motor cooling fan on the rear of the motor shaft. Astralpool's Viron XT spare parts lists show it as item 19, Retaining Clip, Cooling Fan, next to the fan, and Fluidra's motor spare parts list calls it the Circlip for Notos Cooling Fan. It fits wherever the 40285 fan is fitted: the Viron variable speed pumps, and the black Notos 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors in the CTX, BX, FX and XP pumps. One clip per fan. The fan is sold separately.

Single speed pumps with the black Notos motor (750W, 1100W, 1500W)

Motor numbers for the CTX, FX and XP are from Astralpool's pumps installation manual H0717800. Astralpool's BX spare parts list includes the same three black motors, and Astralpool dealers list them for the BX 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0. XP figures are for the single phase models. Some older pumps of these models were built with a different motor (a beige motor on older CTX and BX pumps, a CMG motor on older CX, TX and FX pumps), so go by the motor fitted, not the pump badge.

Not this clip: CMG motors on older CX, TX and FX pumps take the CMG circlip 40209 with the CMG fan 40183. Fluidra's lists show no separate clip for the beige Fasco fan 40256 or the Notos 3 HP and three-phase fan 40275.

Ask first: the Filtrite PX (Astralpool dealers list this clip for it, but no Astralpool parts list for the Filtrite PX was available to check), the 750W mini motor 71310 on the CTX 180, FX 190 and E-Series, and any motor not covered above. Send us a photo of the motor data plate and the old clip.

Confirm this clip by the fan it holds:

1. Does your pump take the 40285 fan? Then it takes this clip. Viron XT P320 or P520 of any series, Viron eVo P320 or P600, or a CTX, BX, FX or XP with the black Notos motor 71313, 71314 or 71319 (now SP71613, SP71614 and SP71619): the fan is 40285 and the clip is 40285C.
2. CTX, BX, FX or XP? Read the motor data plate. A beige motor (71323, 71324 or 71329) takes fan 40256, and Fluidra lists no separate clip for it. A CMG motor takes fan 40183 with the CMG circlip 40209.
3. Check the old clip. If the clip is missing, bent, stretched or was damaged getting the fan off, or the fan moves on the shaft, order a new 40285C. If the fan has broken blades or a cracked hub, order the fan 40285 as well.
4. Any other motor? Ask first. The Notos 3 HP and three-phase fan 40275, the mini motor fans and the Fasco BLDC fan 40269 do not appear with this clip on the lists we checked. Send us a photo of the motor data plate and the old clip before you order.

Why the Clip Matters

The clip keeps the fan locked on the end of the shaft so it turns with the motor. Without it, or with a clip that has lost its tension, the fan can work loose along the shaft and rub on the cowl, and a damaged fan moves far less air.

These pump motors are air cooled. The fan on the rear of the motor shaft draws air in through the cowl and pushes it along the motor body, and the cowl guides that air and keeps fingers and debris away from the spinning fan. Astralpool's Viron XT installation manual says the pump must have proper ventilation to prevent the motor overheating, that overheating due to lack of cooling voids the warranty, and lists poor airflow over the motor as a cause of the HI T over temperature fault. A single speed pump has no display to warn you that it is running hot.

The same manual says to check the surroundings for leaves and debris and, with the power off, to spray a surface insecticide around the control every three months, because ants and some insects are attracted to the warm, dry environment inside the enclosure.

Fitting Notes

Isolate the pump at the power point or switchboard before removing the cowl. Astralpool's pump manuals say the pump must be installed and serviced by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000.

1. Remove the fan cowl from the rear of the motor.
2. Remove the old clip from the end of the shaft and note how it sits.
3. Check the fan. If it is cracked, has broken blades or is loose on its bore, replace it with a new 40285.
4. Fit the new clip the same way the old one sat, check the fan is held firmly and turns only with the shaft, then refit the cowl.

When to Replace

Astralpool's maintenance schedules give no service interval for the clip. Replace it when it is missing, bent, stretched or corroded, when the fan can move on the shaft, or when it was damaged getting the fan off.
