Confirmed Compatibility
The Viron XT P520 motor is 71462 on each Viron XT spare parts list:
- Viron XT P520 XT, original series (Astralpool manual INST 434): item 22, Motor P520, 71462
- Viron XT Series 2 P520C XT (Astralpool manual H0717700): item 22, 71462
- Viron XT P520C XT sold November 2020 to June 2021, and the MKII from July 2021, the current Viron P520C XT pump: item 22, 71462 on both parts lists published by Astralpool dealers
The Jacuzzi JVX300 parts list (North America) also gives motor 71462 (item 21), with controller 21495.

The Viron XT Part Matching Rule (rev. VXP-71462-1.0)
A motor is an expensive part to get wrong. Confirm it by the pump and the motor:
- P520 or P320? Read the badge. The P320 motor is 71460 and the P520 motor is 71462 on every Viron XT spare parts list (item 22), each with its own controller (21488 and 21489). Astralpool lists a 1 HP control fitted to a 2 HP motor as a cause of the HI A over current fault, so do not mix them.
- Any Viron XT generation. The original (INST 434), Series 2 (H0717700) and MKII lists all give 71462 for the P520.
- Check the motor before replacing it. With the power off, check that the impeller can move freely. BSUC means the rotor is stuck or two phases are shorted, and Astralpool says to repair the motor before the controller.
- Photograph the data plate and the badge. Send us a photo of the motor data plate and pump badge, and we will confirm the motor before you order.
- eVo or older Viron? Ask first. The Viron eVo P600 takes 71422. For the eVo P320, P280, P300 and Filtrite PX, ask us first.
What Three-Phase Means Here
Fluidra's description of 71462 includes 2HP Three-Phase. The motor is driven by the pump's controller: Astralpool's Viron XT manuals specify a standard 10 amp 3-pin plug for a 240V 10 amp power point, so a three-phase supply is not needed for a Viron XT P520. The BSUC fault description refers to the motor's phases.
Viron XT Motor Ratings
| Viron XT model | Astralpool manual | Output | Current | Max speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P320 XT, original | INST 434 | 0.75 kW | 4.1A | 2850 rpm |
| P520 XT, original | INST 434 | 1.5 kW | 6.0A | 2820 rpm |
| P320XT, Series 2 | H0717700 | 0.85 kW | 7.5A | 2850 rpm |
| P520XT, Series 2 | H0717700 | 1.5 kW | 8.0A | 2850 rpm |
All 240V 50 Hz. Both manuals say the pump is supplied with a standard 10 amp 3-pin plug for connection to a 240V 10 amp power point, and that the controller is a plug-in assembly needing no extra wiring.
Viron XT Fault Codes and Checks
- BSUC, Motor is Stuck: the rotor is stuck or stiff enough to prevent starting, or two phases are short circuited. Astralpool says the cause is normally a mechanical fault and to repair the motor before the controller.
- HI A, Over Current: the motor is drawing excessive current. Astralpool lists a wrong impeller, damaged or worn bearings or seal, a 1 HP control fitted to a 2 HP motor, and partially shorted windings.
- HI T, Over Temperature: the control is very hot, from extreme ambient temperatures or poor airflow over the motor. Check the fan, fan cowl and surroundings before suspecting the motor.
- Pump not running: something may be stuck in the impeller. With the power off, Astralpool suggests a flat head screwdriver under the cowl to check for free movement of the impeller. If it does not move, something needs removing; if it does move, the motor may have failed.
- Pump noisy or humming: it could be the impeller, bearings, mechanical seal, capacitor or a burnt out motor.
Astralpool's maintenance schedule says to check for leaks under the pump every three months and to repair or replace the mechanical seal and motor bearing if necessary.

Fitting Notes
Isolate the pump at the power point or switchboard before any work. Astralpool's Viron manuals say the pump must be installed and serviced by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000.
- Photograph the pump badge, the motor data plate and the controller label before dismantling.
- Separate the motor from the wet end and inspect the impeller, mechanical seal, seal plate and O-ring.
- Fit a new mechanical seal if the old one was leaking or is worn, and transfer or replace the fan, clip and cowl.
- Refit the matching controller for the pump model, then have the electrician test the pump.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which pumps does the 71462 motor fit?
The Viron XT P520: the original P520 XT, the Series 2 P520C XT and the MKII P520C XT all list motor 71462 as item 22. Send us a photo of your data plate and we will confirm before you order.
Does 71462 need a three-phase power supply?
No. The Viron XT manuals specify a standard 10 amp 3-pin plug for a 240V 10 amp power point. The three-phase in Fluidra's description refers to the motor, which the pump's controller drives.
Will the P320 motor fit a P520?
No. Each motor has its own controller, and Astralpool lists a 1 HP control fitted to a 2 HP motor as a cause of the HI A over current fault.
What is the rating of the Viron XT P520 motor?
Astralpool's original XT manual (INST 434) gives 1.5 kW output, 240V 50 Hz, 6.0A, max 2820 rpm. The Series 2 manual (H0717700) gives 1.5 kW output, 240V 50 Hz, 8.0A, max 2850 rpm.
My pump shows BSUC or hums. Is the motor dead?
Not always. Astralpool says BSUC means the rotor is stuck or stiff enough to prevent starting, or two phases are short circuited, and that the cause is normally mechanical. With the power off, check whether the impeller can move freely. If it moves and the pump still will not run, the motor may have failed.
Should I replace the mechanical seal with the motor?
Astralpool's maintenance schedule says to check for leaks under the pump every three months and to repair or replace the mechanical seal and motor bearing if necessary. If the old motor failed after a leak, fit a new seal when the new motor goes in.
Is this a genuine Astralpool part?
Yes. Heater and Spa Parts is an authorised Fluidra (Astralpool and Zodiac) dealer and warranty agent, and 71462 is the genuine Astralpool part, barcode 9343609014308.
Can I fit the motor myself?
No. Astralpool's Viron manuals say the pump must be installed and serviced by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000. As with all of our products, it must be diagnosed and fitted by a qualified and experienced person.

To the layperson, plumbing sizes and their names can be confusing due to the nominal sizes and naming conventions used.
This is not something we made up. Plumbers and manufacturers have used nominal (meaning ‘by name only’) sizing for decades.
Simply put, in plumbing, named sizes are often not the actual measurements of the pipe, fitting, or part. A PVC pipe called “50mm” or “2"” does not measure 50 mm anywhere. Instead, it follows nominal sizing, an internationally-standardised naming system.
Almost all fittings we use in the pool & spa industry use “pressure PVC” pipe & fittings. Do not confuse with “DWV” or other pipe & fittings and their names and sizes.
Use the Outside Diameter (OD) to check your pipe against fittings. Below is a quick reference for common spa & pool pipe sizes:
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Pipe Diameter (OD) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 15mm | ~21.2–21.5 mm |
| 3/4" | 20mm | ~26.6–26.9 mm |
| 1" | 25 mm | ~33.4–33.7 mm |
| 1.5" | 40 mm | ~48.1–48.4 mm |
| 2" | 50 mm | ~60.2–60.8 mm |
| 2.5" | 65 mm | ~75.2–75.5 mm |
To reiterate, these are nominal sizes and are designed to fit matching fittings — not to measure what their name suggests. These are based on PVC Pressure Pipe AS/NZ 1477 Dimensions1.
- º Internal diameters vary slightly by manufacturer and class.
- 1 Not all pool/spa fittings match these dimensions exactly. Some do not follow Australian or international standards. Chinese spas may use proprietary fittings.
Understanding Plumbing Sizes & Nominal Measurements
Plumbing sizes can be confusing. PVC and many other pipe systems use nominal sizes—the size is a name, not the exact measured dimension. This convention is used across most pool and spa systems and other plumbing areas so that pipes and fittings remain compatible.
Why pipe sizes don’t match the measurements
The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) system standardises pipe dimensions so that pipes, fittings, valves, and accessories interoperate.
Plumbers work with these nominal names every day, but DIYers can be tripped up if they try to match by a tape-measure alone.
How to Measure Pipe Correctly
-
Pipe size is identified by:
- The pipe’s Outside Diameter (OD).
- The fitting’s Inside Diameter (ID) (socket opening).
- Pipe Class / Schedule (e.g., Class 9, 12, 18 or Sch 40) relates to wall thickness and therefore the Internal Diameter (ID) and pressure rating.
- The outside diameter of a fitting is not useful (wall thickness varies by manufacturer).
Hose & Tube Dimensions
Common flexible hose sizes used in pool/spa systems (approximate IDs).
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Inside Diameter (ID) |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8" | 9–10 mm | ~9 mm |
| 3/4" | 19 mm | ~19 mm |
BSP – British Standard Pipe Thread Sizes
BSP thread names are also nominal. The thread OD will not equal the nominal name.
| BSP Thread Size Naming | Outside Diameter (mm / inch) | TPI |
|---|---|---|
| 1/16" BSP | 7.7 mm / 0.304" | 28 |
| 1/8" BSP | 9.7 mm / 0.383" | 28 |
| 1/4" BSP | 13.16 mm / 0.518" | 19 |
| 3/8" BSP | 16.66 mm / 0.656" | 19 |
| 1/2" BSP / 15 mm | 20.99 mm / 0.825" | 14 |
| 5/8" BSP | 22.99 mm / 0.902" | 14 |
| 3/4" BSP / 20 mm | 26.44 mm / 1.041" | 14 |
| 7/8" BSP | 30.20 mm / 1.189" | 14 |
| 1" BSP / 25 mm | 33.25 mm / 1.309" | 11 |
| 1-1/4" BSP | 41.91 mm / 1.650" | 11 |
| 1-1/2" BSP / 40 mm | 47.80 mm / 1.882" | 11 |
| 2" BSP / 50 mm | 59.61 mm / 2.347" | 11 |
| 2-1/4" BSP | 65.71 mm / 2.587" | 11 |
