This is the genuine Astralpool Fan Cowl, part number 40262, for the Fasco 2400W 3 HP motor. Fluidra describes it as the Fan Cowl, Fasco, 2400W 3HP. It covers the Fasco 2400W 3 HP cooling fan (40263, not stocked). The Notos 3 HP and three-phase motors take a different cowl, 40274. One cowl per pump.

Confirmed Compatibility
Fluidra lists this cowl for its Fasco 2400W 3 HP motor. The Astralpool parts lists available to us do not say which pump models were built with that motor.
Astralpool's 2014 CTX and BX spare parts lists also include the 2200W motor 71331 (the 3 HP motor in Astralpool's pumps manual), which dealers list for the CTX 610, BX 3.0 and XP 3.0. Those 2014 lists, and the 2017 CX list, describe 71331 as beige, while Fluidra now supplies 71331 as a black 2200W motor, and Fluidra lists a separate cowl, 40262, for its Fasco 2400W 3 HP motor. A 3 HP pump can therefore have more than one type of motor, so check the motor before ordering.
Not this cowl: Notos 3 HP and three-phase motors take 40274. The 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors take 40283 (black Notos) or 40257 (beige Fasco), and the Viron pumps take 70600.

Confirm this cowl by the motor:
- Is it the Fasco 2400W 3 HP motor? Read the data plate. This cowl is listed for the Fasco 2400W 3 HP motor only.
- Notos 3 HP or three-phase? Different cowl. Notos 3 HP and three-phase motors take 40274 with fan 40275.
- 750W to 1500W? Different cowl. Black Notos 750W, 1100W and 1500W motors take 40283; beige Fasco motors of those sizes take 40257.
- Not sure? Ask first. Send us a photo of the motor and its data plate. A 3 HP pump can have more than one type of motor.
What the Fan Cowl Does
These pump motors are air cooled. The fan on the rear of the motor shaft draws air in through the cowl and pushes it along the motor body, and the cowl guides that air and keeps fingers and debris away from the spinning fan. Astralpool's Viron XT installation manual says the pump must have proper ventilation to prevent the motor overheating, that overheating due to lack of cooling voids the warranty, and lists poor airflow over the motor as a cause of the HI T over temperature fault. A single speed pump has no display to warn you that it is running hot.
The same manual says to check the surroundings for leaves and debris and, with the power off, to spray a surface insecticide around the control every three months, because ants and some insects are attracted to the warm, dry environment inside the enclosure.

Fitting Notes
Isolate the pump at the power point or switchboard before removing the cowl. Astralpool's pump manuals say the pump must be installed and serviced by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000.
- Remove the old cowl from the rear of the motor, noting how it locates.
- While it is off, check the fan and its clip, and replace them if they are cracked, chipped or loose.
- Fit the new cowl the same way round, make sure it is fully seated, and turn the fan by hand to check it does not touch the cowl.
When to Replace
Astralpool's maintenance schedules give no service interval for the fan cowl. Replace it when it is cracked, broken, distorted or missing, or when the fan has been hitting it.

To the layperson, plumbing sizes and their names can be confusing due to the nominal sizes and naming conventions used.
This is not something we made up. Plumbers and manufacturers have used nominal (meaning ‘by name only’) sizing for decades.
Simply put, in plumbing, named sizes are often not the actual measurements of the pipe, fitting, or part. A PVC pipe called “50mm” or “2"” does not measure 50 mm anywhere. Instead, it follows nominal sizing, an internationally-standardised naming system.
Almost all fittings we use in the pool & spa industry use “pressure PVC” pipe & fittings. Do not confuse with “DWV” or other pipe & fittings and their names and sizes.
Use the Outside Diameter (OD) to check your pipe against fittings. Below is a quick reference for common spa & pool pipe sizes:

Understanding Plumbing Sizes & Nominal Measurements
Plumbing sizes can be confusing. PVC and many other pipe systems use nominal sizes—the size is a name, not the exact measured dimension. This convention is used across most pool and spa systems and other plumbing areas so that pipes and fittings remain compatible.
Why pipe sizes don’t match the measurements
The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) system standardises pipe dimensions so that pipes, fittings, valves, and accessories interoperate.
Plumbers work with these nominal names every day, but DIYers can be tripped up if they try to match by a tape-measure alone.

- The pipe’s Outside Diameter (OD).
- The fitting’s Inside Diameter (ID) (socket opening).
- Pipe Class / Schedule (e.g., Class 9, 12, 18 or Sch 40) relates to wall thickness and therefore the Internal Diameter (ID) and pressure rating.
- The outside diameter of a fitting is not useful (wall thickness varies by manufacturer).
