Saltmate cells have been supplied in different configurations over the years, and some are sold with the cell O-ring and lead and some without. If you need either of those as well, check with us before ordering and we will confirm exactly what is in the box for this cell.

Does Your Cell Actually Need Replacing?

Before ordering, rule out the cheaper causes of low chlorine production:

• Low salt. Below 4000 ppm the cell cannot produce properly, and will be damaged. Test first.
• Calcium build-up. White scale bridging the plates reduces output. Clean the cell before condemning it.
• Low water flow. A blocked filter or pump basket can trip the flow switch.
• Powerpack fault. If the cell is visibly good and salt is correct, the fault may be the PCB rather than the cell.

A cell at end of life typically shows worn, pitted or heavily eroded plates, or produces little chlorine even at correct salt levels with a clean cell.

The 5000 ppm Rule (rev. SALT-1.0)

Salt level is what determines how long a Saltmate cell lasts. Before you replace a cell or a powerpack, work through this:

1. Test the salt level before adjusting anything. Take a water sample to a pool shop or use a reliable salt test. Saltmate's ideal operating range is 5000-6000 ppm.
2. Never run below 4000 ppm. Running a Saltmate chlorinator with less than 4000 ppm of salt in the pool will destroy the electrolytic cell. Low salt is the single most common cause of premature cell failure and is not covered as a manufacturing fault.
3. Top up salt before increasing the output dial. If chlorine production has dropped, check salt level and cell condition first. Winding the output up on a low-salt pool accelerates cell damage rather than fixing it.
4. Re-test after heavy rain, backwashing or topping up. Dilution drops salt concentration. Re-test seasonally and after any significant water change, and do not neglect testing through winter.

How to Identify Your Board

1. Read the model badge on the powerpack. It must read SMT90. The cell is matched to the powerpack, not to the pool.
2. Check the plate count and cell length against your old cell. Lay the old cell alongside the photos before fitting. Saltmate has supplied more than one cell body style, including horizontal variants on some units.
3. If the badge is missing or unreadable. Send us photos of the powerpack, the old cell and the housing and we will identify it for you.

SM Series vs SMT Series

Saltmate has used both an earlier SM series and a later SMT series naming across its Standard chlorinators, and you will see both written on powerpacks and in older paperwork (for example SM90 and SMT90). They are not always interchangeable. Read the badge on your own powerpack and match it exactly - if it does not read the same as the model listed above, send us a photo of the label before ordering.

Warranty

Saltmate chlorinators are covered by the manufacturer's express warranty: 2 years full warranty on the powerpack and electrolytic cell, followed by a further 3 years pro rata warranty on the electrolytic cell. Warranty is provided by Saltmate Australia Pty Ltd. Cell damage caused by running below 4000 ppm salt, incorrect installation or chemical imbalance is not a manufacturing fault.

Can I fit a higher output cell to get more chlorine?
No. The cell must match the powerpack output rating.

My cell is white and crusty - do I need a new one?
Not necessarily. That is calcium scale. Clean the cell and re-test before replacing it.
