The Horsepower and Phase Rule (rev. HPR-1.0)

TX, BX and XP impellers are matched to the horsepower of the motor, and most horsepower ratings have separate single-phase and three-phase impellers. The XP pump superseded the BX, and Astralpool's XP-Series parts list uses the same impeller part numbers. Work through these steps before ordering:

1. Read the model and horsepower on the pump label. You are looking for TX, BX or XP and the horsepower, for example BX 2.0.
2. Check the phase on the motor data plate. Astralpool's pump manual lists its single-phase pumps at 240V and its three-phase pumps at 415V.
3. Match both to the table below. Where the table lists a three-phase impeller, a three-phase pump takes that part, not the single-phase one.
4. If the labels are unreadable, send us photos of the pump label, the motor data plate and the old impeller. We would rather identify it for you than have it come back.

Which TX / BX / XP Impeller Do I Need?

Sources: Astralpool 2019-20 catalogue and the current Astralpool XP-Series parts list. 40060FE is named in its part description as the 1.0HP TX / BX three-phase impeller. The XP-Series list does not show a separate 1HP three-phase impeller, so if you have an XP 1HP three-phase pump, send us a photo of the pump label before ordering.

Fit a New Mechanical Seal at the Same Time

The pumps this impeller fits use the 3/4" Type 6 mechanical seal, part PS3868 / 75509. Earlier Astralpool catalogues show the BX / TX / CX / E / CTX seal as 75508.

The two seal faces separate when the impeller is removed from the motor shaft, and a disturbed seal can leak under the pump once it is back in service. We recommend fitting a new seal every time the impeller is changed.

Three-Phase Fitting Notes

• Astralpool's XP manual requires three-phase XP pumps to be hard-wired, and the electrician must check the direction of rotation against the arrow on the seal plate.
• Astralpool's XP-Series parts list includes an impeller bolt (78187) and the o-ring listed with it (78711) for three-phase pumps. If your pump has them, inspect both while the impeller is off and replace them if they are worn or damaged.
• Three-phase electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrician.

Symptoms of a Failed or Worn Impeller

• The motor runs normally but flow and filter pressure are down
• Noise or humming from the pump. Astralpool lists the impeller as a possible cause, along with the bearings, mechanical seal, capacitor and motor
• The pump will not run because debris is jammed in the impeller. Astralpool notes that a damaged hair and lint basket can let debris through to the impeller
• Vanes worn, chipped or cracked

If the impeller is jammed, check whether it can be freed before replacing it. Astralpool treats debris jammed in the impeller as general maintenance rather than a warranty fault, and warns that running a pump dry for any length of time causes severe damage.
