Gas Consumption
| Gas input at full fire | 264 MJ/h |
| Approximate metered volume | 6.8 m³/h |
Figures are at full fire. The heater only draws this while it is actually calling for heat, so daily usage depends on how far below set point the water sits, the weather, and whether a cover is fitted. Natural gas is billed in megajoules in Australia, so the MJ/h figure is the one your retailer charges against. The cubic-metre figure assumes 38.7 MJ/m³, which varies a little between networks.

Standard Features
- Cupro-nickel heat exchanger as standard, for corrosion resistance in salt-chlorinated and chemically treated water
- Totally managed water flow: the same water velocity through every tube, for faster heating and longer heat exchanger life
- Patented polymer header by-pass, which Hayward quotes as cutting pump run time by up to 18% against less efficient heaters
- Forced-draft combustion: the fan-driven burner keeps combustion stable in wind, so no high-wind stack is needed outdoors
- Low NOx burner
- Digital LED control with Standby, Pool and Spa modes and separate pool and spa set points (18 to 40 °C)
- 2-wire remote thermostat input for third-party controllers and automation
- Universal junction boxes on both sides, water connections can be plumbed left or right hand
- Front-panel-only access for service
- Fault code display on the control panel
Installation Requirements
- Licensed installation only. Must be installed and commissioned by a licensed gas fitter, to AS 5601.1 (gas installations), AS/NZS 3000 (wiring) and local gas authority requirements. The installer must set the manifold pressure to the figure on the rating plate and provide a compliance certificate.
- Outdoor as supplied. Clearances: top unobstructed, 600 mm at the front, 150 mm at the rear, 300 mm on the water connection side and 150 mm on the opposite side. Do not install under an overhang that is less than 1 m above the top of the heater, under a deck, or within 600 mm of outdoor air conditioning equipment. Flue outlet clearances to windows, doors, walkways and building openings are per AS/NZS 5601.1.
- Indoor installation requires Hayward’s Australian vertical termination flue kit (part UHXNEGVT12501AU, 150 mm (6 in) flue, maximum 12 m vertical run, maximum 6 m horizontal and three elbows). See the flue kit instructions linked above.
- Distance from water. The heater is to be at least 3.5 m from the inside wall of the pool or spa unless separated from it by a solid barrier.
- Altitude: rated for installation up to 610 m above sea level.
- Water flow: minimum 95 L/min, maximum 475 L/min. If the pump and filter system can exceed 475 L/min, a manual bypass valve must be fitted.
- Heater above or below water level: the water pressure switch must be adjusted at commissioning per the installation manual.
- Chlorinators and dosing systems must be installed downstream of the heater, lower than the heater, with a corrosion-resistant positive-seal check valve between the heater outlet and the chlorinator. Chemicals back-feeding into the heat exchanger will destroy it and void warranty. Never put chlorine tablets in the skimmer.
- Electrical: plug and play 240 V 50 Hz supply. Bond the heater’s earth lug to the pool bonding system per AS/NZS 3000.
Water Balance - Warranty Critical
Incorrect water balance is the most common cause of heat exchanger failure. Hayward’s warranty excludes leaks caused by acidic water (pH below 7.2) and by scale or sediment from high pH (above 7.8) or high hardness. Hayward’s recommended ranges:
| pH | 7.4 to 7.6 |
| Total alkalinity | 80 to 120 ppm |
| Calcium hardness | 200 to 400 ppm |
| Salt (salt-chlorinated pools) | 2,700 to 5,000 ppm |
| Free chlorine | 1 to 3 ppm |
| Bromine | 2 to 4 ppm |
Test the water at least weekly. Until the water is balanced, run the heater on bypass if one is fitted.
Pump Run-On After Heating
If the filtration pump stops the moment the heater shuts down, residual heat left in the heat exchanger can trip the manual-reset high limit switch. Hayward’s manual says to run the pump for 10 minutes after heater use, and Hayward publishes connection instructions for a Dontek cool-down timer on the Australian H-Series (5 minute preset, no more than 10 minutes). If your pool controller has no cool-down mode, fit a run-on timer such as the Dontek H5RO gas heater run-on controller we stock.
Control Panel Fault Codes
- LO - limit string open while calling for heat (a pressure switch or temperature limit in the safety circuit). Restarts 2 minutes after the fault clears
- SF - thermistor fault, sensors disagree by 3 °C or more or read out of range
- HE - water temperature rising too fast through the heater (check water flow). Manual restart needed after the third occurrence
- HS - inlet water above 40 °C. Resumes once the water drops to 40 °C
- lo - limit string open with no call for heat, operation continues
- Sb - keypad button held or stuck for more than 30 seconds
- bo - bypass operation mode, the heater is being controlled by a 2-wire remote thermostat (not a fault)
The ignition control board has its own LED fault indication for ignition and flame faults. Both lists are in the Service & Installation Manual linked above.
Warranty
- 12 months from the date of purchase under the Hayward Pool Products (Australia) limited heater warranty, including the heat exchanger and headers. Full terms are in the Owner’s Manual linked above.
- Hayward’s Australian warranty terms state that claims are recognised only where the heater has been installed by a technician approved by Hayward Pool Products, and that gas heater claims are handled directly by Hayward through its authorised service network on site, not by over-the-counter exchange. Read the terms before you buy and have the heater installed by a licensed gas fitter.
- Hayward does not cover the additional costs of attending sites more than 20 km from an authorised Hayward service outlet.
- Not covered: damage from incorrect gas pressure or fuel, water chemistry (pH below 7.2 or above 7.8, scale, sediment), freezing, flooding or installation faults.
- Hayward recommends annual maintenance by authorised personnel to keep the heater operating safely.
- Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law are not affected.
Shipping
At 75 kg packaged this is a two-person lift. Someone may be required to help take the heater from the delivery truck if the carrier cannot provide a tailgate lifter. Check the carton for freight damage before signing.

To the layperson, plumbing sizes and their names can be confusing due to the nominal sizes and naming conventions used.
This is not something we made up. Plumbers and manufacturers have used nominal (meaning ‘by name only’) sizing for decades.
Simply put, in plumbing, named sizes are often not the actual measurements of the pipe, fitting, or part. A PVC pipe called “50mm” or “2"” does not measure 50 mm anywhere. Instead, it follows nominal sizing, an internationally-standardised naming system.
Almost all fittings we use in the pool & spa industry use “pressure PVC” pipe & fittings. Do not confuse with “DWV” or other pipe & fittings and their names and sizes.
Use the Outside Diameter (OD) to check your pipe against fittings. Below is a quick reference for common spa & pool pipe sizes:
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Pipe Diameter (OD) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 15mm | ~21.2–21.5 mm |
| 3/4" | 20mm | ~26.6–26.9 mm |
| 1" | 25 mm | ~33.4–33.7 mm |
| 1.5" | 40 mm | ~48.1–48.4 mm |
| 2" | 50 mm | ~60.2–60.8 mm |
| 2.5" | 65 mm | ~75.2–75.5 mm |
To reiterate, these are nominal sizes and are designed to fit matching fittings — not to measure what their name suggests. These are based on PVC Pressure Pipe AS/NZ 1477 Dimensions1.
- º Internal diameters vary slightly by manufacturer and class.
- 1 Not all pool/spa fittings match these dimensions exactly. Some do not follow Australian or international standards. Chinese spas may use proprietary fittings.
Understanding Plumbing Sizes & Nominal Measurements
Plumbing sizes can be confusing. PVC and many other pipe systems use nominal sizes—the size is a name, not the exact measured dimension. This convention is used across most pool and spa systems and other plumbing areas so that pipes and fittings remain compatible.
Why pipe sizes don’t match the measurements
The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) system standardises pipe dimensions so that pipes, fittings, valves, and accessories interoperate.
Plumbers work with these nominal names every day, but DIYers can be tripped up if they try to match by a tape-measure alone.
How to Measure Pipe Correctly
-
Pipe size is identified by:
- The pipe’s Outside Diameter (OD).
- The fitting’s Inside Diameter (ID) (socket opening).
- Pipe Class / Schedule (e.g., Class 9, 12, 18 or Sch 40) relates to wall thickness and therefore the Internal Diameter (ID) and pressure rating.
- The outside diameter of a fitting is not useful (wall thickness varies by manufacturer).
Hose & Tube Dimensions
Common flexible hose sizes used in pool/spa systems (approximate IDs).
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Inside Diameter (ID) |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8" | 9–10 mm | ~9 mm |
| 3/4" | 19 mm | ~19 mm |
BSP – British Standard Pipe Thread Sizes
BSP thread names are also nominal. The thread OD will not equal the nominal name.
| BSP Thread Size Naming | Outside Diameter (mm / inch) | TPI |
|---|---|---|
| 1/16" BSP | 7.7 mm / 0.304" | 28 |
| 1/8" BSP | 9.7 mm / 0.383" | 28 |
| 1/4" BSP | 13.16 mm / 0.518" | 19 |
| 3/8" BSP | 16.66 mm / 0.656" | 19 |
| 1/2" BSP / 15 mm | 20.99 mm / 0.825" | 14 |
| 5/8" BSP | 22.99 mm / 0.902" | 14 |
| 3/4" BSP / 20 mm | 26.44 mm / 1.041" | 14 |
