77730 is the genuine Astralpool clamp band that holds the multiport valve onto the tank of ECA550 and ECA650 sand filters. It comes complete with the bolt, nut and Allen key. It fits around the neck of the filter and valve and, once tightened, keeps the valve to tank joint closed while the filter is under pressure. Astralpool's spare parts list calls it "MPV clamp band - ECA models". The filters are also sold and listed as Hurlcon ECA and Astral ECA.
Replace the band if it is cracked, bent or distorted, or will no longer tighten to good engagement. New fasteners come with it, so you do not need kit 78399 as well. If the band is sound and only the bolt is seized, stripped or missing, the bolt, nut and Allen key kit 78399 on its own is the cheaper fix.
What's Included
- Clamp band
- Clamp band bolt
- Clamp band nut
- Allen key to suit
The Clamp Band Rule (rev. ECA-1.1)
Astralpool ECA, EC, CA and Cantabric sand filters look alike. Check these before ordering:
- Read the model label on the tank. Astralpool lists 77730 for ECA models: ECA550 and ECA650.
- Look at how the multiport valve is held on. A clamp band around the neck of the tank and valve, tightened with a bolt, is the ECA arrangement this part suits.
- A large threaded lock ring screwed onto the top of the tank means a CA or Cantabric filter. These do not use a clamp band. For CA models the lock nut is 77720.
- A clamp band on a tank labelled EC550 or EC650 (no "A") means an EC filter. EC filters also use a clamp band, but Astralpool lists 77730 for ECA models, so send us a photo of the label and band before ordering.
This follows Astralpool's own installation instructions: ECA and EC valves are secured with a clamp band assembly around the neck of the filter and valve, while CA and Cantabric valves are held by a lock ring tightened by hand.
Worked Example
Say the clamp band on an ECA550 has cracked and the joint between the multiport valve and the tank now weeps when the pump runs. The label reads ECA550 and the valve is held by a clamp band, so this band, 77730, is the right part, and it comes with a new bolt, nut and Allen key. With the pump off and the pressure released, remove the old band and check the green valve to tank O-ring before refitting. If the O-ring is flattened, nicked or out of shape, order 7201750057 at the same time. Had the band been sound with only a seized bolt, kit 78399 would have been enough.
Which Part Do I Need?
| What you have | What to order |
|---|---|
| ECA550 or ECA650, clamp band cracked, bent, distorted or will no longer tighten | This clamp band, 77730, with bolt, nut and Allen key included |
| ECA clamp band sound, but the bolt is seized, stripped or missing, or the Allen key is lost | Clamp band bolt, nut and Allen key kit 78399 |
| Clamp band and bolt sound and correctly tightened, but water weeps from the valve to tank joint | Valve to tank O-ring 7201750057 |
| CA280, CA300, CA340 or CA400, valve held by a threaded lock ring | CA MPV lock nut 77720 |
| EC550 or EC650 (no "A"), valve held by a clamp band | Not confirmed for this band. Send us a photo of the tank label and band first |
What This Clamp Band Does Not Fit
- CA series (CA280, CA300, CA340, CA400) and Cantabric filters. These hold the valve with a threaded lock ring, not a clamp band. Astralpool lists the CA lock nut as a separate part, 77720.
- EC550 and EC650 (no "A" in the model). These also use a clamp band, but they are a different filter family that takes a different multiport valve, 76037, and Astralpool lists 77730 for ECA models. We have not confirmed this band for EC filters. Astralpool publishes different tank diameters for the two families (ECA550 586mm and ECA650 665mm, EC550 540mm and EC650 630mm), which helps if the label is missing, but send us a photo before ordering.
Signs the Clamp Band Needs Replacing
- The band is cracked, split, bent or distorted.
- The band will no longer tighten to good engagement around the neck of the filter and valve, even with a sound bolt.
- The valve to tank joint leaks and the band is damaged. If the band is sound and correctly tightened, the O-ring 7201750057 is the more likely cause.
Safety
- Turn the pump off and release the pressure in the filter before loosening or removing the clamp band. The valve to tank joint is a pressure joint.
- Never run the filter with the clamp band missing, cracked or loose. Astralpool rates ECA filters to a maximum operating pressure of 200 kPa.
- Tighten only enough for good engagement. Over-tightening will not cure a leaking seal and can distort the band.
Fitting Notes
With the pump off and the pressure released, Astralpool's installation instructions for ECA filters are:
- Place the valve to tank O-ring in the cavity on the tank body.
- Install the multiport valve into the top tank opening, making sure the O-ring stays in position, and rotate the valve to best suit the plumbing lines.
- Once the valve is positioned, fit the clamp band assembly around the neck of the filter and valve and tighten it sufficiently for good engagement.
- Astralpool notes it is not necessary to over-tighten.
Then restart the pump and check the joint for leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the 77730 clamp band do?
It holds the multiport valve onto the tank of an Astralpool ECA550 or ECA650 sand filter. It fits around the neck of the filter and valve and, once tightened, keeps the valve to tank joint closed while the filter is under pressure.
Does 77730 include the bolt and Allen key?
Yes. 77730 comes complete with the clamp band bolt, nut and Allen key, so you do not need kit 78399 as well. Kit 78399 on its own is for a sound band whose fasteners are damaged or lost.
Will this fit a CA or Cantabric filter?
No. CA and Cantabric filters hold the multiport valve with a threaded lock ring, not a clamp band. For CA models the lock nut is part 77720.
Will this fit an EC550 or EC650 filter?
Not confirmed. EC filters also use a clamp band, but Astralpool lists 77730 for ECA models. Send us a photo of the tank label and your existing band and we will confirm before you order.
Does this fit a Hurlcon ECA filter?
Yes, if the tank label reads ECA550 or ECA650. These filters are also sold and listed as Hurlcon ECA and Astral ECA.
My ECA filter leaks where the valve meets the tank. Do I need a new clamp band?
Only if the band is cracked, distorted or will no longer tighten. If the band is sound but the bolt is seized or missing, kit 78399 is the fix. If the band and bolt are both sound and correctly tightened, the valve to tank O-ring 7201750057 is the more likely cause.
How tight should the clamp band be?
Astralpool's instructions are to tighten it sufficiently for good engagement, and they note it is not necessary to over-tighten. Over-tightening will not cure a leaking seal.
Can I run the filter without the clamp band?
No. The clamp band holds the multiport valve onto the tank, and that joint is under pressure whenever the pump runs. Astralpool rates ECA filters to a maximum operating pressure of 200 kPa. Keep the pump off until the new band is fitted and tightened.
Is this a genuine Astralpool part?
Yes. Heater and Spa Parts is an authorised Fluidra dealer and warranty agent, and this is the genuine Astralpool clamp band, part 77730.

To the layperson, plumbing sizes and their names can be confusing due to the nominal sizes and naming conventions used.
This is not something we made up. Plumbers and manufacturers have used nominal (meaning ‘by name only’) sizing for decades.
Simply put, in plumbing, named sizes are often not the actual measurements of the pipe, fitting, or part. A PVC pipe called “50mm” or “2"” does not measure 50 mm anywhere. Instead, it follows nominal sizing, an internationally-standardised naming system.
Almost all fittings we use in the pool & spa industry use “pressure PVC” pipe & fittings. Do not confuse with “DWV” or other pipe & fittings and their names and sizes.
Use the Outside Diameter (OD) to check your pipe against fittings. Below is a quick reference for common spa & pool pipe sizes:
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Pipe Diameter (OD) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 15mm | ~21.2–21.5 mm |
| 3/4" | 20mm | ~26.6–26.9 mm |
| 1" | 25 mm | ~33.4–33.7 mm |
| 1.5" | 40 mm | ~48.1–48.4 mm |
| 2" | 50 mm | ~60.2–60.8 mm |
| 2.5" | 65 mm | ~75.2–75.5 mm |
To reiterate, these are nominal sizes and are designed to fit matching fittings — not to measure what their name suggests. These are based on PVC Pressure Pipe AS/NZ 1477 Dimensions1.
- º Internal diameters vary slightly by manufacturer and class.
- 1 Not all pool/spa fittings match these dimensions exactly. Some do not follow Australian or international standards. Chinese spas may use proprietary fittings.
Understanding Plumbing Sizes & Nominal Measurements
Plumbing sizes can be confusing. PVC and many other pipe systems use nominal sizes—the size is a name, not the exact measured dimension. This convention is used across most pool and spa systems and other plumbing areas so that pipes and fittings remain compatible.
Why pipe sizes don’t match the measurements
The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) system standardises pipe dimensions so that pipes, fittings, valves, and accessories interoperate.
Plumbers work with these nominal names every day, but DIYers can be tripped up if they try to match by a tape-measure alone.
How to Measure Pipe Correctly
-
Pipe size is identified by:
- The pipe’s Outside Diameter (OD).
- The fitting’s Inside Diameter (ID) (socket opening).
- Pipe Class / Schedule (e.g., Class 9, 12, 18 or Sch 40) relates to wall thickness and therefore the Internal Diameter (ID) and pressure rating.
- The outside diameter of a fitting is not useful (wall thickness varies by manufacturer).
Hose & Tube Dimensions
Common flexible hose sizes used in pool/spa systems (approximate IDs).
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Inside Diameter (ID) |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8" | 9–10 mm | ~9 mm |
| 3/4" | 19 mm | ~19 mm |
BSP – British Standard Pipe Thread Sizes
BSP thread names are also nominal. The thread OD will not equal the nominal name.
| BSP Thread Size Naming | Outside Diameter (mm / inch) | TPI |
|---|---|---|
| 1/16" BSP | 7.7 mm / 0.304" | 28 |
| 1/8" BSP | 9.7 mm / 0.383" | 28 |
| 1/4" BSP | 13.16 mm / 0.518" | 19 |
| 3/8" BSP | 16.66 mm / 0.656" | 19 |
| 1/2" BSP / 15 mm | 20.99 mm / 0.825" | 14 |
| 5/8" BSP | 22.99 mm / 0.902" | 14 |
| 3/4" BSP / 20 mm | 26.44 mm / 1.041" | 14 |
| 7/8" BSP | 30.20 mm / 1.189" | 14 |
| 1" BSP / 25 mm | 33.25 mm / 1.309" | 11 |
| 1-1/4" BSP | 41.91 mm / 1.650" | 11 |
| 1-1/2" BSP / 40 mm | 47.80 mm / 1.882" | 11 |
