Electrode Only or Complete Cell? (rule CELL-1.0)
This listing is the electrode only, 21917: the plate stack on its own, supplied without a housing. The electrode is the part that wears out. The housing is the clear barrel it sits inside, and it does not wear, it fails. Check yours before you order:
- Unscrew the cell nut and withdraw the electrode. Look at the plates. Flaking, bare grey titanium, or heavy pitting means the electrode is finished and this is the part you need.
- Hold the empty housing up to the light. If it is clear, uncracked, not crazed and the sealing faces are smooth, keep it. This electrode is all you need.
- If the housing is cracked, crazed, milky, brittle or weeping at the unions, do not order this electrode on its own. A cracked housing will not seal against a new electrode. Order the complete cell, 21907 instead (buy here).
Replace the cell o-ring either way. It is a few dollars and it is the usual cause of a leak after a cell change.
Specifications
- Part number: 21917 (supersedes 20917)
- Supplied as: electrode only, no housing included
- Complete cell version: 21907 (buy here)
- Plates: 9 solid plates
- Plate length: 150mm
- Type: Self-cleaning, reverse-polarity
- Brand: Astralpool (formerly Hurlcon), a Fluidra brand
Chlorine output is set by the chlorinator's power supply, not by the electrode alone. The same cell produces a different gram-per-hour figure in a VX9 than in an E35, which is why published output figures for this part vary between sellers. Match on chlorinator model, not on a gram rating.
Warranty: 3 Years on VX, 2 Years on E-Series
It is the same physical part either way, but Astralpool warrants it differently depending on which chlorinator it is fitted to. Per the current Astralpool express warranty schedule, effective 1 February 2026:
- Fitted to a VX chlorinator (VX9, VX9S, VX9T, VX9TL), 3 years
- Fitted to an E-Series chlorinator (E35), 2 years
Most sellers quote a single flat figure for this part. That is not what the manufacturer's schedule actually says.
Warranty Conditions Worth Knowing
- It must be bought from a Fluidra Authorised Dealer. Astralpool's express warranty only applies to product purchased from an authorised dealer. We are one. A cell bought from an unauthorised online seller may not be covered at all, which is worth weighing against a cheaper listing elsewhere.
- Cover starts 30 days after the date of purchase to allow for installation.
- Residential single-dwelling pools. Cells used at hotels, swim schools, rehabilitation centres, apartment or townhouse complexes and other multi-dwelling or commercial sites are covered for 1 year.
- Water chemistry is a condition. Cover assumes water balanced to AS 3633, pH held between 7.2 and 7.8, and free chlorine not exceeding 4ppm. Damage from scaling or corrosion caused by out-of-balance water is excluded. Keep your test results.
- Register the product with myFluidra using the serial number and proof of purchase.

Why the Warranty Is Better Here
- We are an authorised Astralpool, Hurlcon and Fluidra dealer and warranty agent, so buying from us satisfies the authorised-dealer condition on its own.
- Claims are assessed and handled by us in-house, not bounced to a supplier who bounces you to the manufacturer.
- Our team includes ex-Astralpool and ex-Hurlcon technicians who built and serviced these chlorinators.
Genuine Only, And Why That Matters
The replacement cell market is full of aftermarket, generic and copy electrodes, often listed so they look like the real thing. Non-genuine cells typically use a lighter titanium substrate and a lower-grade mixed-metal-oxide coating, which wears through early and drops chlorine output well before the promised life. Fitting a non-genuine part can also affect cover on the chlorinator itself. If a genuine cell is advertised well below the going rate, it is worth asking what is actually being sent.

When to Replace
Replace the electrode when the chlorinator reports low output or a low-salt fault that persists after the salt level is confirmed correct, when the plates show bare titanium or flaking coating, or when chlorine production has clearly fallen off with balanced water. Scale on the plates is not failure. A scaled cell often recovers after cleaning. Check for scale before condemning a cell, particularly in hard-water areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this include the housing?
No. 21917 is the electrode only, the plate stack with no housing. If your housing is cracked, crazed or milky, order the complete cell, 21907, instead.
Does the VX9 cell fit an E35?
Yes. The VX9 and E35 use the same cell. Astralpool's E35 is the successor to the Hurlcon VX9 and shares the electrode.
Will this fit a VX6, VX7 or VX11?
No. VX6 and E25 use 21905 or 21915, VX7 uses 21906 or 21916, and VX11 uses 21908 or 21918. Ordering by series number alone is the most common mistake.
How many plates does the VX9 / E35 cell have?
Nine solid plates, 150mm long.
How long is the warranty on this cell?
Three years if it is fitted to a VX chlorinator, two years if it is fitted to an E-Series chlorinator, per Astralpool's express warranty schedule effective 1 February 2026. Cover begins 30 days after purchase. Commercial and multi-dwelling installations are covered for one year.
Does the warranty apply no matter where I buy the cell?
No. Astralpool's express warranty only applies to product purchased from a Fluidra Authorised Dealer. We are an authorised dealer and warranty agent, so buying here satisfies that condition.
My cell arrived with a grey surround, not clear. Is it genuine?
Yes. Astralpool changed the surround and genuine cells now ship in either black or grey. The current housing design fits both old and new chlorinator bodies.
Is this a genuine Astralpool part?
Yes. We are an authorised Astralpool and Fluidra dealer and warranty agent, and this is the genuine part. We do not sell aftermarket or copy electrodes.

To the layperson, plumbing sizes and their names can be confusing due to the nominal sizes and naming conventions used.
This is not something we made up. Plumbers and manufacturers have used nominal (meaning ‘by name only’) sizing for decades.
Simply put, in plumbing, named sizes are often not the actual measurements of the pipe, fitting, or part. A PVC pipe called “50mm” or “2"” does not measure 50 mm anywhere. Instead, it follows nominal sizing, an internationally-standardised naming system.
Almost all fittings we use in the pool & spa industry use “pressure PVC” pipe & fittings. Do not confuse with “DWV” or other pipe & fittings and their names and sizes.
Use the Outside Diameter (OD) to check your pipe against fittings. Below is a quick reference for common spa & pool pipe sizes:
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Pipe Diameter (OD) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 15mm | ~21.2–21.5 mm |
| 3/4" | 20mm | ~26.6–26.9 mm |
| 1" | 25 mm | ~33.4–33.7 mm |
| 1.5" | 40 mm | ~48.1–48.4 mm |
| 2" | 50 mm | ~60.2–60.8 mm |
| 2.5" | 65 mm | ~75.2–75.5 mm |
To reiterate, these are nominal sizes and are designed to fit matching fittings — not to measure what their name suggests. These are based on PVC Pressure Pipe AS/NZ 1477 Dimensions1.
- º Internal diameters vary slightly by manufacturer and class.
- 1 Not all pool/spa fittings match these dimensions exactly. Some do not follow Australian or international standards. Chinese spas may use proprietary fittings.
Understanding Plumbing Sizes & Nominal Measurements
Plumbing sizes can be confusing. PVC and many other pipe systems use nominal sizes—the size is a name, not the exact measured dimension. This convention is used across most pool and spa systems and other plumbing areas so that pipes and fittings remain compatible.
Why pipe sizes don’t match the measurements
The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) system standardises pipe dimensions so that pipes, fittings, valves, and accessories interoperate.
Plumbers work with these nominal names every day, but DIYers can be tripped up if they try to match by a tape-measure alone.
How to Measure Pipe Correctly
-
Pipe size is identified by:
- The pipe’s Outside Diameter (OD).
- The fitting’s Inside Diameter (ID) (socket opening).
- Pipe Class / Schedule (e.g., Class 9, 12, 18 or Sch 40) relates to wall thickness and therefore the Internal Diameter (ID) and pressure rating.
- The outside diameter of a fitting is not useful (wall thickness varies by manufacturer).
Hose & Tube Dimensions
Common flexible hose sizes used in pool/spa systems (approximate IDs).
| Imperial Name | Metric Name | Inside Diameter (ID) |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8" | 9–10 mm | ~9 mm |
| 3/4" | 19 mm | ~19 mm |
BSP – British Standard Pipe Thread Sizes
BSP thread names are also nominal. The thread OD will not equal the nominal name.
| BSP Thread Size Naming | Outside Diameter (mm / inch) | TPI |
|---|---|---|
| 1/16" BSP | 7.7 mm / 0.304" | 28 |
| 1/8" BSP | 9.7 mm / 0.383" | 28 |
| 1/4" BSP | 13.16 mm / 0.518" | 19 |
| 3/8" BSP | 16.66 mm / 0.656" | 19 |
| 1/2" BSP / 15 mm | 20.99 mm / 0.825" | 14 |
| 5/8" BSP | 22.99 mm / 0.902" | 14 |
| 3/4" BSP / 20 mm | 26.44 mm / 1.041" | 14 |
| 7/8" BSP | 30.20 mm / 1.189" | 14 |
| 1" BSP / 25 mm | 33.25 mm / 1.309" | 11 |
| 1-1/4" BSP | 41.91 mm / 1.650" | 11 |
| 1-1/2" BSP / 40 mm | 47.80 mm / 1.882" | 11 |
| 2" BSP / 50 mm | 59.61 mm / 2.347" | 11 |
| 2-1/4" BSP | 65.71 mm / 2.587" | 11 |
| 2-1/2" BSP | 75.18 mm / 2.960" | 11 |
| 3" BSP | 87.88 mm / 3.460" | 11 |
| 4" BSP | 113.03 mm / 4.450" | 11 |
| 5" BSP | 138.43 mm / 5.450" | 11 |
| 6" BSP | 163.83 mm / 6.450" | 11 |
